5 March 2010
After a somewhat weak start to the new calendar year, the value of private equity investment in cleantech companies surged by 133 per cent in February to $547m from $235m in January 2010 and significantly improved year-on-year to stand more than three times higher than the $149m recorded in February 2009, according to a report from ZEPHYR and Bureau van Dijk, compiled exclusively for NewNet.
Against this increase in value, volume also improved, but at a much slower rate of five per cent over the four weeks to 21 deals and by 50 per cent year-on-year from 14 transactions in February 2009.
The US accounted for 43 per cent of February’s cleantech private equity investment by volume, with a total of nine deals signed off for the region compared with two for its nearest rivals, the UK, Spain, Germany and France. However, despite the US more than doubling year-on-year from four deals in February 2009, France and Spain were the countries with the largest volume growth over the 12 months.
While the US led by volume, Spain was placed first by value with a total of $216m worth of deals in February. This was a fivefold improvement month on-month from $ 42m in January 2010 and accounted for 39 per cent of February’s cleantech private equity investment by value. Spain’s value was also 11 per cent higher than its nearest rival, the US, with $194m worth of transactions in February.
