Zephyr Monthly Cleantech Report – September 2009

Private equity investment in cleantech companies stepped up significantly in September with deal volume rising 44 per cent and value almost tripling to $247m from a 12 month low of $86m in August. However, despite this improvement, volume and value were down 46 per cent and 73 per cent, respectively, year-on-year from 24 deals worth $915m in September 2008, according to this monthly cleantech report prepared by ZEPHYR and Bureau van Dijk Electronic Publishing exclusively for NewNet.

September’s largest private equity deal by value involved BP’s Indian wind power assets, which were bought out by IDFC Private Equity for $134m – boosting the country into first place by value, outperforming its nearest rival, Sweden, which recorded one deal worth $46m. A total of three transactions, worth just $3m, targeted France, making it the most important region in terms of deal volume.

Meanwhile, two deals were signed off in the US with a combined value of $6m. This indicates lower value deals targeting these countries, contrasting sharply year-on-year, with the US signing off nine deals worth $300m and France’s four transactions valued at $32m in September 2008.
