ZEPHYR Monthly Cleantech Report – April 2009

In stark contrast to March’s findings, private equity and venture capital in cleantech companies declined by 90 per cent in April, according to a monthly cleantech report prepared by ZEPHYR and Bureau van Dijk Electronic Publishing exclusively for New Energy World Network.

The month showed total deal value fell to a new 12-month low of $78m and stood 85 per cent lower year-on-year. Volume declined at a much slower rate and the ten deals recorded over the four-week period signaled a nine per cent decline month-on-month.

Geography

The US was recorded as the leader of volume and value, accounting for seven private equity or venture capital investments over the course of April valued at $48m. By value, India was in second place after receiving $30m for just one deal. Other active countries included Japan, Spain and France.

Promising gains seen in March failed to be repeated in April and overall investment in the cleantech industry fell by 36 per cent in terms of deal volume and 59 per cent by value month-on-month.

Approximately 65 transactions were recorded in April, representing an annual decline of 23 per cent, while in monetary terms the deterioration was sharper over the same period at 49 per cent.
