Zephyr Monthly Cleantech Report – July 2009

Private equity investment in cleantech companies soared in July, almost tripling to $266m after crashing to $92m in June. However, despite these gains deal value was 84 per cent weaker year-on-year and was almost ten times down on the 12 month high of $2.584bn achieved in November 2008, according to this monthly cleantech report prepared by ZEPHYR and Bureau van Dijk Electronic Publishing exclusively for NewNet.

Deal volume also fell back by 15 per cent over the four weeks, from 13 deals to 11, and was down by more than a third year-on-year.The US led the way by volume and value after it had five deals signed off in July worth a total of $101m. Private equity investment in the country improved over the four weeks from two transactions worth $13m. However, year-on-year it was still 29 per cent down in terms of volume and 64 per cent lower by value.

France was overtaken by Hong Kong in monetary terms as the latter’s one deal was worth $8m more than France’s two deals valued at $50m.
