Renewable Energy Generation has agreed to sell Canadian independent wind developer AIM PowerGen Corporation to UK energy utility International Power Canada, Inc. for CAN$119m.

German industrial group Wacker Chemie has exited its solar wafer business and will transfer its shares in joint venture Wacket Schott Solar (WSS) to its former partner Schott Solar. Wacker and Schott Solar have reached agreement on the key points of a sales transaction.

NRG Energy, headquartered in New Jersey, USA has begun a pilot project at the Company’s Big Cajun II electrical generating station in Louisiana, USA to evaluate local conditions for growing switchgrass and high-biomass sorghum as renewable biomass fuels. These locally grown grasses will be further tested to determine their capacity to replace a portion of the coal at the plant and reduce its carbon intensity, the company said.

Austrian biomass power plant developer Cycleenergy Beteiligungs has raised €10m in second round funding. Portugese private equity firm Banif Investment Managers led the round with a €6m investment through its New Energy Fund, with participation from 3i, a London fund advised by 3TS Capital Partners, and Cycleenergy GmbH.

Spanish renewable energy company Iberdrola has opened an office in Bucharest, Romania, to increase its presence in the Eastern European marketplace. The company has 1,600MW of wind projects in the pipeline across Romania, with 700MW worth at an advanced administrative phase, according to a statement.

American Superconductor Corporation, an alternative energy technologies company, and Beijing-based wind turbine manufacturer Sinovel have signed a new contract worth more than $100m for core electrical components to be utilised in Sinovel’s 3MW wind turbines. AMSC expects to begin shipping sets of core components under the new contract in March 2010 and to complete all shipments by the end of calendar year 2011.

SolarCity and US Bancorp Community Development Corporation (USBCDC) have doubled the size of their fund to finance solar projects. The fund, originally announced in June, will be expanded to finance $100m in solar projects in 2009. The partnership backs SolarCity’s solar leases and power purchase agreements (PPA), financing options that can allow homeowners and businesses to put no money down on solar systems and save money from day one on electricity costs.

Solar energy developer SolFocus has partnered with renewable energies developer Dreen Europe and Portuguese utility Águas de Portugal to install 8.5MW of power of concentrator photovoltaic technologies at its facilities. The project is part of ADP Group’s plan to invest more than €830m by 2014 in renewable energy projects.

Renewable energy company RWE npower has signed a multi-million pound deal with papermaker Tullis Russell to supply its paper mill with heat and electricity from a biomass-fuelled co-generation plant. The new plant will replace the existing coal-fired plant and has an energy production capacity of 50MW.

Boston solar firm Spire Corporation has entered into a commercial agreement to provide Uni-CHEM, a Korean producer of leather products, with a 60MW per year turnkey solar cell line and a 50MW per year module line. The deal is worth an estimated $60m.

AIM-listed investment fund Ludgate Environmental Fund has released its end of year results to 30 June 2009. The fund focuses on companies with products or services which optimise the use of natural resources while reducing environmental impact has achieved a £15m increase in Net Asset Value (NAV) to £50.4m from £35.4m in 2008 of which, £21.1m is currently invested. Approximately £1.6m was earned in interest income and dividends from these investments. The NAV per share at year end was 110p, as a result, the directors have been able to recommend a dividend of 1.5p per share.

San Francisco solar electricity provider Recurrent Energy has launched its European operations with 4.8MW of rooftop solar power in Spain. The firm was awarded a feed-in tariff commission by the Spanish government for the projects, which will be located in Madrid and Barcelona and are expected to come on-stream in mid 2010.

Canadian Hydro Developers, Inc. has agreed to acquire the rights to a 4,400MW offshore wind prospect in Ontario from Wasatch Wind, Inc., a private US-based renewable energy company. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Amtech Systems, an Arizona, US-based supplier of production and automation systems and consumables for the manufacture of solar cells, semiconductors, and silicon wafers, said that its solar subsidiary, Tempress Systems, has received a follow-on multi-system order for its diffusion processing equipment from an existing customer in Asia. The order for multiple systems is expected to ship within the next six to nine months.

The Canadaian Government is to invest over $70m in an ethanol production plant belonging to Canadian energy provider Husky Energy, and approximately $5.4m over the next seven years in the Canadian production wing of New York biodiesel firm Methes Energies International. The funding will be used to develop the Canadian renewable fuel sectors and stimulate job creation and the local economy at the site of the plants, Lloydminster, Sasketchewan, and Mississauga, Ontario.
