NRG Energy begins pilot biomass project for use at Big Cajun II, Louisiana

NRG Energy, headquartered in New Jersey, USA has begun a pilot project at the Company’s Big Cajun II electrical generating station in Louisiana, USA to evaluate local conditions for growing switchgrass and high-biomass sorghum as renewable biomass fuels. These locally grown grasses will be further tested to determine their capacity to replace a portion of the coal at the plant and reduce its carbon intensity, the company said.

Biomass company Cycleenergy raises €10m in venture capital

Austrian biomass power plant developer Cycleenergy Beteiligungs has raised €10m in second round funding. Portugese private equity firm Banif Investment Managers led the round with a €6m investment through its New Energy Fund, with participation from 3i, a London fund advised by 3TS Capital Partners, and Cycleenergy GmbH.

Spanish renewable energy company Iberdrola opens Romania office

Spanish renewable energy company Iberdrola has opened an office in Bucharest, Romania, to increase its presence in the Eastern European marketplace. The company has 1,600MW of wind projects in the pipeline across Romania, with 700MW worth at an advanced administrative phase, according to a statement.

AMSC and Sinovel sign $100m follow-on electrical components contract for wind turbines

American Superconductor Corporation, an alternative energy technologies company, and Beijing-based wind turbine manufacturer Sinovel have signed a new contract worth more than $100m for core electrical components to be utilised in Sinovel’s 3MW wind turbines. AMSC expects to begin shipping sets of core components under the new contract in March 2010 and to complete all shipments by the end of calendar year 2011.

SolarCity and US Bancorp expand fund to finance solar projects

SolarCity and US Bancorp Community Development Corporation (USBCDC) have doubled the size of their fund to finance solar projects. The fund, originally announced in June, will be expanded to finance $100m in solar projects in 2009. The partnership backs SolarCity’s solar leases and power purchase agreements (PPA), financing options that can allow homeowners and businesses to put no money down on solar systems and save money from day one on electricity costs.

Solar energy developer SolFocus has partnered with renewable energies developer Dreen Europe and Portuguese utility Águas de Portugal to install 8.5MW of power of concentrator photovoltaic technologies at its facilities. RWE npower receives £8.1m from Scottish Government for 50MW Tullis Russell biomass plant

Renewable energy company RWE npower has signed a multi-million pound deal with papermaker Tullis Russell to supply its paper mill with heat and electricity from a biomass-fuelled co-generation plant. Ludgate Environmental Fund positive on end of year results, appoints Matrix Corporate Capital as broker

AIM-listed investment fund Ludgate Environmental Fund has released its end of year results to 30 June 2009. The fund focuses on companies with products or services which optimise the use of natural resources while reducing environmental impact has achieved a £15m increase in Net Asset Value (NAV) to £50.4m from £35.4m in 2008 of which, £21.1m is currently invested. Approximately £1.6m was earned in interest income and dividends from these investments. The NAV per share at year end was 110p, as a result, the directors have been able to recommend a dividend of 1.5p per share.

Amtech announces follow-on multi-system solar order
