Private equity investment in cleantech companies has been unstable throughout 2009 and in June the value of deals in the sector plunged 90 per cent to $83m from $803m in May 2009. Volume slipped by a third from 18 deals to 12 over the four weeks and was 29 per cent down year-on-year from 17 transactions in June 2008, according to this monthly cleantech report prepared by ZEPHYR and Bureau van Dijk Electronic Publishing exclusively for NewNet.

Three Spanish companies had deals signed off in June, making Spain the most important country in terms of private equity deal numbers, ahead of the US and Germany, which had two apiece. However, China led the way in monetary terms with one deal worth $30m valued above the three Spanish transactions, for which considerations were not disclosed.

A third more mergers and acquisitions were recorded month-on-month for the cleantech sector in June, bringing a new 12-month high of 116 deals and building on May’s growth. Increasing confidence in cleantech companies was evidenced by a second consecutive gain in total deal value, which surged 73 per cent from $4.32bn to $7.46bn in just four weeks. Deal volume was 14 per cent higher year-on-year while value almost doubled from $3.803bn to $7.46bn in the same timeframe, revealing a dramatic increase in the value placed on cleantech companies in acquisitions relative to growth in transaction volume.
