Military use of electric vehicles to rocket over next ten years

3 May 2011

Military, security and police vehicles will constitute 15 per cent of the total electric vehicle market by 2021, according to new figures released today.

That share of the market could be achieved within the next decade and does not take into account regular hybrid and pure electric vehicles minimally modified for these sectors.

The report, Electric Vehicles for Military, Security and Police 2011 to 2021, found that although the bulk of this demand will be for military vehicles on land, water and airborne applications will each become businesses of more than $1bn.

In particular, it found vehicles to be used for unmanned operations to be especially important.

There are a number of electric or hybrid vehicles about to be deployed in military settings, bringing both a number of advantages and concerns as they become more widespread.
