The World Bank and its member the International Finance Corporation have put together a $12m budget to target low-cost renewable energy lighting sources in Africa, according to reports.
The Lighting Africa programme will move Africa’s off-grid energy market away from fuel-based lighting to renewable energy sources such as solar powered lanterns, Reuters said.
The World Bank initiative said it supports the private sector to develop, accelerate and sustain the market for modern off-grid lighting technologies tailored to the needs of African customers.
Lighting Africa said it works closely with a range of key stakeholders along the supply chain including manufacturers, component suppliers, importers and distributors.
