The level of oil imports in 2011 were at their lowest in more than a decade, raising hopes for energy independence and more widespread use of renewable energy.
The US imported 8.91 million barrels of oil per day last year, figures from the Energy Information Administration, show.
As oil prices rise today to their highest level in 43 months over fears of an exploded pipeline the move towards renewable energies is once again in the agenda.
A report in today’s Financial Times said, however, that many analysts say any sign of energy independence is still in its ‘infancy’.
