Power giant Alstom has inaugurated the world’s largest offshore wind turbine at Carnet, located near Saint-Nazaire on the shores of the Loire estuary.
The 6MW Haliade 150 wind turbine was developed after a call for tenders launched by the French government was made in July 2011, which aims to install 3GW of wind turbine power off French shores by 2015.
The Haliade will have to undergo a series of tests over the next year on land at the Carnet site before a second wind turbine is placed in the sea off the Belgian coast.
Pre-series production is planned for 2013 with main production due to start in 2014.
This project will involve nearly 200 suppliers to the offshore wind turbine sector and if the tender is successful, Alstom plans to establish up to four factories to produce components for these offshore wind turbines and their construction in Saint-Nazaire and Cherbourg.
