Dutch developer Eneco has plans to build the biggest offshore wind farm to date off the south coast of the UK.
The Navitus Bay development could comprise up to 200 separate wind turbines and may be up to three to four times bigger than any farm in existence today.
According to a report in The Telegraph, Eneco has submitted a 173-page report to a government body set up to deal with nationally significant projects.
But the scheme, a full planning application for which is expected in the next year, has already attracted criticism, particularly from the sailing community.
The opposition movement against Navitus Bay wind farm – set to sweep across 76 square miles – is being spearheaded by the Royal Yacht Squadron, based on the Isle of Wight.
