NS Power and OpenHydro deploy Canadian tidal turbine

NS Power and its tidal technology partner OpenHydro have successfully deployed the first commercial scale in-stream tidal turbine in the Bay of Fundy, Canada. The 1MW commercial scale turbine reached the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) deployment site, in the Minas Passage, yesterday afternoon and began preparations for deployment.

Subsidiary of Ocean Power Technologies, Ocean Power Technologies Australasia (OPTA), in partnership with Leighton Contractors, has received a AUS$66.46m grant from the federal government of Australia to build a 19MW wave power project off the coast of Victoria, Australia.

Acciona grows nine month net profits by 255 per cent, renewables capacity reaches 7,308MW

Spanish engineering, construction and infrastructure company Acciona has announced a 255 per cent growth in profits for the first nine months of 2009 compared with the same period last year, a total of €1.29bn. The company's renewable energy capacity also reached 7,308MW.

World’s first commercial scale tidal stream turbine performing above expectations

The world's only commercial scale tidal stream turbine is performing above expectations, according to developer Marine Current Turbines, a UK-based wave power company. Located in Strangford Narrows, Northern Ireland, the SeaGen turbine produces an average of 5MWh or electricity during each 6.25 hours of each ebb and flood tide.

Scottish Renewables endorses government ‘marine road map’ reportp

Scottish Renewables, a trade association for the Scottish green power industry, has welcomed the findings of a joint government and industry report outlining development plans for the marine energy industry. According to the association, the report's recommendations could create 12,500 jobs in the sector by 2020, endorsing calls for increased stimulus funding for the sector, including a repeat of the Wave and Tidal Energy support scheme, which could mean that Scottish wave and tidal generators receive more revenue for the electricity they generate than operators in England or Wales.
