Industry group the Algal Biomass Organization (ABO) has urged Congress and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus and Ranking Member Charles Grassley to adopt an amendment to ensure algae-based fuels receive the financial and regulatory benefits currently afforded to other advanced biofuel feedstocks. Massachusetts, US-based renewable energy company Bodega Algae and Maine-centred Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences have received a $150,000 six-month Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Science Foundation to develop and test a prototype for growing high concentrations of algae for use as biofuel.

The US trade association for the algae industry, the Algal Biomass Organisation (ABO) has challenged the conclusions of a report published in Environmental Science and Technology that claims conventional crops have lower environmental impacts than algae in energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and water.
