Investor-owned power utility Detroit Edison has been given the green light to add electricity from a large-scale landfill gas project in the US to its renewable energy portfolio as it plans for ten per cent of its power deliveries to become renewable by 2015. 
The energy challenge offers a vast opportunity to global industry as it looks to overcome the twin hurdles of rising population and the need for lower carbon emissions, according to James Smith, chairman of energy giant Shell UK. 
Biorefinery operator Enerkem’s US business has obtained a conditional commitment from the US Department of Agriculture for an $80m loan guarantee supporting a municipal waste-to-biofuel project in Mississippi.

A joint bioethanol venture between Shell Brazil and Brazilian ethanol producer Cosan Indústria e Comércio has been cleared under the European Union (EU) merger regulation.
