NRG Energy begins pilot biomass project for use at Big Cajun II, Louisiana

NRG Energy, headquartered in New Jersey, USA has begun a pilot project at the Company's Big Cajun II electrical generating station in Louisiana, USA to evaluate local conditions for growing switchgrass and high-biomass sorghum as renewable biomass fuels. These locally grown grasses will be further tested to determine their capacity to replace a portion of the coal at the plant and reduce its carbon intensity, the company said.

BIO urges US Environmental Protection Agency to maintain flexibility for Renewable Fuel Standard

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must acknowledge the full extent of the uncertainty in its estimation of biofuels' lifecycle and ensure that biofuel technologies are not pre-emptively disqualified from participation in the Renewable Fuel Standard, according to Washington DC-based industry body the Biotechnology Industry Organisation (BIO).
