US Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan has announced projects funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for wood-to-energy and biomass utilisation. These 30 projects are located throughout 14 states, with funding totaling $57m - $49 m for wood-to-energy grants and $8m for biomass utilisation.

The annual Survey of Renewable Electricity and Heat Projects in South West England, carried out by south west sustainable energy agency Regen SW, shows that heat from renewable sources has risen by 36 per cent to 56MW, while electricity from renewable sources has grown by just 2.89MW to 155MW.

UK power and gas company E.ON has announced plans to a biomass-fired plant in Bristol, England. The 150MW proposed Portbury Dock Renewable Energy Plant would generate enough power to supply more than 200,000 homes by burning carbon neutral wood, the company said.

US venture capital firms Burrill & Company and Khosla Ventures have invested in biomass technology company HCL CleanTech, a US company and its Israeli subsidiary founded by Professors Avram Baniel, Professor Ari Eyal and Eran Baniel. Burrill & Company and Khosla Ventures were joined in this Series A round of financing by Zohar Gilon, the lead seed investor, alongside company founders. The proceeds will serve to continue R&D in Israel and build a pilot plant in the US to be completed in 2010.

The World Bank board of executive directors has approved financing of $600m for Turkey's Private Sector Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Project. The main objective of the project is to help increase privately owned and operated energy production from indigenous renewable sources within the market-based framework of the Turkish Electricity Market Law, thereby helping to enhance energy efficiency and curb greenhouse gas emissions as a result.
