Energy storage technology company Beacon Power Corporation has been selected by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) for a project award valued at $2m. The award would provide partial funding for 1MW of flywheel energy storage in Stephentown, New York - the first of 20MW that Beacon expects to build and operate on the site.

AlertMe.com, a provider of smart energy saving systems for homes, has secured £8m in Series B funding by cleantech and renewable energy-focused venture capital investors Good Energies, Index Ventures, SET Venture Partners and VantagePoint Venture Partners. The financing will enable AlertMe.com to extend its product development programme, continue to ramp up its distribution strategy and to expand the existing team, the company said.

Energy efficient lighting company Metrolight has closed an additional fundraising of about $3m from existing Metrolight shareholders including Virgin Green Funds, Gemini Israel Funds, Israel Cleantech Ventures and other investors, founders and private angels. The Israeli company has also appointed Zvi Segal as CEO.

Clean water technology company AquaGenesis, Inc. has closed a Series A private financing led by US cleantech venture capital fund Clean Pacific Ventures. The size of the investment was not disclosed. The financing will enable AquaGenesis to enter the residential and commercial water treatment and conditioning markets, the company said.

Algae biofuel company Solazyme, Inc. has surpassed $76m in funding, including the company's recently closed $57m Series C financing. Venture capital firms Braemar Energy Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners led the financing round and were joined by other new investors including VantagePoint Venture Partners. All major existing investors participated in the round, including The Roda Group, Harris and Harris Group, and Solazyme chairman Jerry Fiddler.
