The International Energy Agency (IEA) has launched World Energy Outlook (WEO) 2008, analysing the challenges posed by worsening oil supply prospects, higher energy prices and rising emissions of greenhouse gases. According to the report, modern renewables are predicted to grow most rapidly, overtaking gas to become the second-largest source of electricity soon after 2010.

Investment bank Goldman Sachs has agreed to purchase the majority of non-profit investment company E+Co's carbon offset portfolio. For all the recent talk of CCS’s potential role in reducing CO2 emissions, against increasingly ambitious carbon reduction commitments by Member State governments in Europe, CCS is still as untested and expensive a technology as ever, according to this briefing from Allen & Overy. This technology, with its potential for trapping CO2 from a variety of industrial plant from refineries to cement plant and storing it securely in rock, could indeed be a valuable tool in the battle against climate change.

The economic value of emissions trading in the global market is clear. The global market for emissions credits more than doubled in value in 2007 to $64bn, compared to $31bn in 2006, and traded volume in the regulatory markets increased to over 2.9 billion tonnes of CO2. Although smaller in volume, growth in the voluntary market also has been significant, according to law firm Allen & Overy.
