The flexibility and potentially vast storage capacity for hydrogen gas makes it the ideal choice for utility-scale energy storage, according to one expert. 
Dutch cleantech company AEG Power Solutions has been contracted to supply an electricity supply system, as part of a 6MW energy storage project in Germany. 
The US Department of Energy has awarded more than $7m to fund four projects looking to advance hydrogen storage technologies for use in electric vehicles. 
European energy company E.ON is set to embark upon a €5m pilot project in north-east Germany to convert electricity produced by wind turbines into hydrogen that can be stored in the country’s gas grid. 
Enel Group, which recently floated its renewable energy business on a number of European exchanges, is to integrate hydrogen storage technology developed by fledgling French specialist McPhy Energy into its renewable energy framework. 
French solid state hydrogen storage technology company McPhy Energy has delivered the first hydrogen storage tank to the CEA Laboratory of Innovation for New Energy Technologies and Nanomaterials (Liten) in Grenoble as part of a research contract.
