Nasdaq-listed marine energy company Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) has formed a contract with Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding to further develop its technology for application in Japanese sea conditions. 
Hopes of a tidal project being built on the Severn Estuary in UK waters have been revived through a consortium of private companies who revealed to NewNet that government funding is not necessary for the scheme to progress.
A surge of investment in new energy sources will be needed to ensure the UK’s energy security and reduce the reliance on fossil fuels in the decades ahead, Secretary of State for Energy Chris Huhne said today as he announced a raft of decisions on UK infrastructure projects as part of the revised energy National Policy Statements. 
Industrial group Able has received regional approval to construct a £400m Marine Energy Park at Able Humber Port that it touted earlier this year, which is expected to produce a wealth of jobs to the region, reports said.

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) for commercial-scale wave and tidal energy device testing in Scotland, UK, said it is expanding to attract international businesses with smaller prototypes at earlier stages of development.
