The investment opportunities in the offshore wind sector are ‘immense’ even though utility balance sheets and state lending organisations are not providing enough funding for European targets to be met, according to ratings agency Standard & Poor’s.

The Department of Energy, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement and the Department of Commerce’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have granted eight joint research awards totalling nearly $5m to sponsor the siting and permitting of offshore wind facilities and ocean energy generated from waves, tides and thermal gradients. 
The Premier of Canadian province Nova Scotia and the Governor of US state Maine have formed a partnership to develop ocean energy technologies along the Bay of Fundy coastline, which crosses the two regions.
