The UK will need to move to an integrated approach using the latest direct current (DC) technology to connect its offshore wind farms as efficiently and cost effectively as possible, a leading power group said.
US Energy Secretary Steven Chu has released a report from the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), which comprehensively analyses the key factors impacting the deployment of offshore wind power in the United States. 
The US state of Maine has formed an offshore renewable energy task force in conjunction with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement (BOEM). 
European wind giant Gamesa has called time on its negotiations with Germany-based energy group Bard and will pursue any future offshore wind projects alone. 
Infrastructure major General Electric has moved into the next stage of its offshore wind strategy with the planned installation of five offshore demonstration projects of its biggest turbine yet in conjunction with Norwegian and Swedish Energy companies. 
Engineering and support services company O-Power has been established to target the growing market that is developing on the back-off sea-based wind farms. 
Renewable industry experts Eric Briar and Toby Mead, both former members of environmental advisers Metoc, are set to join UK marine and offshore engineering specialists SeaRoc, part of the Natural Power group. 
German energy company EnBW Erneuerbare Energien has contracted Siemens to supply 80 wind turbines for the EnBW Baltic 2 offshore wind farm, Germany's second commercial offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. 
Offshore Renewable Energy Installations (OREIs) are one of the biggest changes to sea area use since the oil and gas boom of the 1970s and 1980s. Michael Starling, principal consultant at BMT Renewables, a subsidiary of BMT Group, explains the different elements developers must navigate to gain approval for their offshore projects.
