Water companies are starting to wake up to the potential of using smart technology as part of the upgrade process for an ageing infrastructure. 
UK smart grid specialist Flexitricity has received an undisclosed amount of finance from existing investor Archangel Informal Investments to fund new activity. 
US technology company Honeywell has formed an agreement with the Tianjing Economic-Technological Development Area to implement a smart grid response project in China. 
UK utility Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution has received approval from the regulator Ofgem for a £64m low carbon network project in the Thames Valley and Shetland islands. 
Global IT giant IBM has joined a consortium to help develop a smart grid distribution network fed by at least 50 per cent renewable energy.

Sainsbury’s has entered a ten-year deal with clean technology company RLtec to provide smart grid technology in over 200 stores, expected to save 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year in the UK.
