The president of the government of Andalusia, José Antonio Griñán, alongside Spanish energy utility Endesa has unveiled the SmartCity initiative in Malaga, Spain, which introduces a new urban energy management model in a bid to improve energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions and shift consumption to renewable energies.

Control4, a provider of energy efficient home control and entertainment systems, has secured an additional $17.3m in equity financing. Best Buy Capital, Mercato Partners and University Venture Fund join current investors Foundation Capital, Frazier Technology Ventures, Thomas Weisel Venture Partners and vSpring Capital to accelerate Control4's development in energy management systems and home energy.

US smart metering company Ember Corporation, has closed an additional $8m in funding from its primary venture capital investors and strategic partners. Polaris Venture Partners, GrandBanks Capital, RRE Ventures, Vulcan Capital, DFJ ePlanet Ventures, New Atlantic Ventures, WestLB Mellon Asset Management (formerly West AM) and strategic partners including Chevron Technology Ventures and Stata Venture Partners participated in the round. This new round combined with existing investments from STMicroelectronics, Hitachi Corporation and MIT bring the total capital Ember has raised to $89m.

US energy delivery company Pepco Holdings, Inc. has acquired the first of what could be nearly 2 million smart meters for installation in the homes and businesses of customers in three states and the District of Columbia over the next five years. The new digital meters are a component of PHI's plan to build a smart grid network that could eventually serve the company's 1.9 million customers in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland and New Jersey, the company said.
