US President Barack Obama has proposed a new fuel economy standard for the US auto industry, improving the energy efficiency of all US automobiles to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016, an increase of more than eight miles per gallon per vehicle. This will result in projected reduction in oil consumption of approximately 1.8 billion barrels, or, in the President's words, ‘more oil than we imported last year from Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Libya, and Nigeria combined.'
