In the first half of 2009, Spanish electric utility company Endesa reported a net income of €2.263bn, a 7.2 per cent increase on the first half of the previous year. The figures for the first half of 2009 include net income from the sale of assets to Acciona for €1.003bn.

The UK has released its Low Carbon Transition Plan to plot out how it will meet the cut in emissions set out in the budget of 34 per cent on 1990 levels by 2020. A 21 per cent reduction has already been delivered - equivalent to cutting emissions entirely from four cities the size of London, according to the Department of Energy And Climate Change.

GE has unveiled plans for its Net Zero Energy Home project, which combines GE's most efficient appliances and lighting, the company's new energy management systems, and GE power generating and storing technologies in new home construction. When applied together, the system would enable a homeowner to achieve net zero energy costs by 2015, the company said.

US energy utility Tampa Electric has filed with the Florida Public Service Commission (FPSC) the company's proposed energy efficiency goal of 200 million kWh for the next ten years - an increase of 70 per cent over the company's current goal. The company plans to enhance several of its current 27 customer programmes and explore new programme opportunities for all customer sectors: residential, commercial and industrial, according to a statement.

As financial markets deteriorated in October 2008, Solar Electric Power Association executive director Julia Hamm challenged the solar and utility industries to deploy solar power on a massive scale despite new economic barriers. SEPA, an organisation comprised of over 550 utilities and solar industry members, has also issued a report demonstrating how the industry has responded amidst a tough economic climate.
