US venture capital investment in cleantech companies in Q2 2009 reached $572m, an increase of 73 per cent in terms of capital, with 48 financing rounds, a 100 per cent increase in number of transactions compared to Q1 2009, according to an Ernst & Young analysis based on data from Dow Jones VentureSource.

Grid Net, a San Francisco-based developer of smart grid network management software and communications products, has secured an undisclose amount of Series C funding. The funding was led by clean energy investor Braemar Energy Ventures and included existing investors Catamount Ventures, GE Energy Financial Services and Intel Capital.

California-based electric car and battery company, Coda Automotive has closed its Series B investment round, totaling $24m. The capital will be used to support the development and 2010 California market entry of its all-electric sedan and funding of its battery manufacturing joint venture, the company said.

Solicore, Inc., a developer, manufacturer and supplier of ultra-thin, flexible lithium polymer batteries, has closed the first phase of its Series D preferred stock financing round. The company has raised $12.2m to date in this round and expects a second closing within three weeks that will bring the total of the Series D round to approximately $13.3m.

US solar power installer SunRun has closed a Series B round of funding for $18m led by Accel Partners and joined by existing investor, Foundation Capital. SunRun plans to use the funding to meet demand for its residential solar service and expand into new markets, it said.

US smart grid software company eMeter Corporation has closed a $32m private financing led by venture capital investor Sequoia Capital and joined by existing investor, Foundation Capital. Voltaix, a provider of materials that enhance the performance of semiconductor chips and solar cells, has closed a $9m investment from clean energy investor Novus Energy Partners. Voltaix will use the funds from the Novus investment to further develop its manufacturing capabilities to meet growing demand for thin film-based solar power and advanced CPU and DRAM products, the company said.
