US venture capital firms invested $4.9bn into cleantech companies in 2011, a decline of 4.5 per cent compared to the 2010 when the figure was just over $5bn. 
US venture investment into the energy and utilities industry raised $2.9bn for 134 deals as investment stayed flat but deal activity rose 14 per cent, according to new research.
