Ascent Solar Technologies hits over 9.5 per cent module efficiency

Thin-film solar module producer Ascent Solar Technologies has achieved greater than 9.5 per cent efficiency for its flexible monolithically integrated modules, according to the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

NREL judged that the modules measured as high as 9.64 per cent in conversion efficiency. The modules were produced at the company’s 1.5 MW pilot production line.

Dr Prem Nath, senior vice president of manufacturing for Ascent Solar, remarked, ‘We have been working to achieve these efficiencies during our internal optimisation process, and we view this achievement as a tremendous breakthrough. The test modules measure six inches wide by one foot long and serves as our building block for portable power and building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) products.’

NREL is the primary US laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development.
