Canadian province of Manitoba introduces renewable fuels mandate

The Canadian Renewable Fuels Association has welcomed the decision by the Government of Manitoba to mandate the blending of two per cent biodiesel in the provincial diesel supply.

‘Today is a good day for homegrown biofuels in Manitoba and Canada,’ said Gordon Quaiattini, president of the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association. ‘With today’s decision, Manitoba will become the first province in Canada to realise the many benefits of blending biodiesel in its fuel supply. Biodiesel is good for the environment, good for farmers, and good for the economy.’

The Manitoba two per cent biodiesel mandate alone is equal to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 56,000 tons a year, or taking 11,000 cars off the road.
British Columbia has a biodiesel mandate of five per cent coming in by 1 January 2010 and Alberta has a two per cent biodiesel mandate by 1 July 2010.

Founded in 1984, the CRFA is composed of representatives from the ethanol and biodiesel industry, including grain and cellulose ethanol producers, biodiesel producers, fuel technology providers, and agricultural associations.
