The UK Government has launched a £10m fund to award the best low carbon community projects as part of the Low Carbon Communities Challenge.
The initiative offers the chance for 20 communities to benefit from funding for low carbon schemes, which could range from biomass to electric car charging schemes. It was launched as part of the government’s Low Carbon Transition Plan. The scheme is also intended to provide information and research on how communities can operate together to reduce emissions and tackle climate change.
Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband said, ‘We’re searching for communities across the country to kick start the low carbon revolution. The challenge is an opportunity for communities to lead the way so that everyone can play their part in tacking climate change and save money on fuel bills.’
The project will bring the UK nearer to its commitment of cutting its emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, as around a quarter a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions originate from domestic heating, lighting and powering appliances. It will award those towns that show that they are taking steps towards carbon reduction and are committed to developing infrastructure to reduce emissions.
Miliband added, ‘The UK has the most ambitious emissions reduction commitments in the world and projects like this will develop the policies we need to be successful.’
