Carbon capture and storage technology developer Alstom has commended the Obama administration for establishing a task force to promote the development of carbon capture and storage in the US.
President Obama announced the establishment of the task force earlier this month as part of the Administration’s focus on creating jobs and environmental benefits by supporting the development of clean technologies.
Alstom Power President Philippe Joubert said, ‘Alstom is delighted to see the Obama administration promoting the power of carbon capture and storage technologies to create and preserve jobs, reduce carbon emissions, and safeguard the continued reliability and affordability of electricity.’
Alstom is developing a number of technologies in ten demonstration projects in seven countries worldwide. Key US demonstration projects include the American Electric Power Mountaineer power plant in New Haven, West Virginia, and a project with The Dow Chemical Company in Charleston, West Virginia. Alstom Power also was the technology developer and supplier for a successful demonstration project conducted at the We Energies Power Plant in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin.
Pierre Gauthier, Alstom’s US country president said, ‘Carbon capture and storage is an area where the government and the private sector need to work in co-operation. Companies such as Alstom are moving forward to commercialise this key clean technology solution, but our customers need clarity on the legal and regulatory rules that will influence decisions on how and when to apply carbon capture and storage. This task force is ideally suited to address such issues. Nonetheless, we agree with President Obama that climate legislation is needed to create certainty around the price of carbon. Such certainty is absolutely necessary to fuel the development of carbon capture and storage and other clean technologies that can both create jobs and improve the environment.’
Alstom, a member of the US Climate Action Partnership (USCAP), was one of a number of companies that signed on to a full-page advertisement recently calling for Congress to take action on climate legislation as soon as possible. The group recorded orders of €24.6bn in 2008 or 2009.
