Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has urged world leaders to join the December climate discussions in Copenhagen in order to spur action to reduce greenhouse emissions, according to the Financial Times.
Concerned that an agreement may not be reached because of inadequate global leadership, Lula da Silva will prompt US President Barack Obama into attending the Copenhagen talks next week, according to the report.
At the pre-Copenhagen talks held in Barcelona, world leaders suggested that negotiations regarding a climate deal may continue until the end of 2010. Lula da Silva’s words come after US climate envoy Todd Stern reportedly said President Obama will only attend the discussions if a climate deal is likely to be achieved.
Lula da Silva threatened not to attend the talks if China’s President Hu Jintao and India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh did not attend. No new commitments regarding Brazil’s role in cutting greenhouse gas emissions have been made.
