Electric vehicle charging system developer Coulomb Technologies has installed the first networked charging station for electric vehicles in San Jose, California under its $37m ChargePoint America programme in collaboration with Ford, Chevrolet and smart USA.
San Jose mayor Chuck Reed said the installation will go towards the region’s efforts to make the Bay Area the ‘electric vehicle capital’ of the US.
The ChargePoint America scheme aims to offer hundreds of free charging stations throughout the Bay Area for use by individual vehicle owners and by fleets.
Coulomb’s automaker partners have announced plans to introduce electric vehicles in the Bay Area in the coming months.
The first two ChargePoint America stations were installed at the McEnery Convention Center.
Coulomb’s ChargePoint America programme will provide nearly 5,000 charging stations to participants in nine regions in the US.
In October 2007, Reed articulated his 15-year Green Vision for the region, which set ten ambitious goals for environmental protection and economic development.
This plan included the installation of 100,000 solar roofs, recycling and reusing all of the city’s water and an ambitious target of supplying 100 per cent of the region’s energy requirements with renewable sources of energy.
ChargePoint America is geared towards providing 4,600 public and home ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations by October 2011, adding to the existing ChargePoint Network.
