Electric utility PECO files $342m plan for energy efficiency programmes

2 July 2009

PECO, a Philadelphia-based electric utility, has filed a $342m plan with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to help reduce energy use by 1.2 billion KWh by 2013.

Also included in the plan is more than $28 million in additional low-income energy efficiency programmes.

‘We are committed to providing customers the information and programmes they need to understand, manage and reduce their energy use, especially as we complete the transition to market-based rates,’ said Denis O’Brien, PECO president and CEO. ‘Helping customers use less energy and save money is one important way we can help customers prepare for the end of rate caps on 1 January, 2011. And these programmes, if approved, are a win-win, because using energy more efficiently also provides significant environmental benefits.’

The energy efficiency programme covers $20m in CFL rebates; $28m in low-income energy efficiency schemes; $35m in rebates on energy efficiency products; $10m in appliance pick-up initiatives and $5m in rebates for home solar projects.

The company’s demand reduction programmes include $41m in direct energy use management programmes; $9m in new time of use rates and $46m in programmes to reduce energy demand during the 100 hours of the year with the highest demand for electricity.
