The Pennsylvania NanoMaterials centre for commercialisation has provided a seventh round of funding to five companies in the US state to accelerate the adoption of nanomaterials for new energy technology applications.
The $450,000 round of grants was underwritten by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to a range of local companies, which matched the financing award.
Pittsburgh-based company Crystalplex matched a $130,000 grant with $65,000 for the development of its proprietary quantum dot light-emitting diode prototypes
Illuminex equally matched a $130,000 award to commercialist its copper-silicon nano-structured anode for the use in next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
Another Pittsburgh company ICX was awarded $30,000, which it matched with $31,648, for developing a biofuel production process of molecules that are identical to diesel fuel.
This novel biofuel is designed to be a drop-in replacement for petroleum-based fuels and has the potential to operate with existing infrastructure and multiple sources of energy generation.
Pennsylvania State University professor Dr Panghai Wann was given a $30,000 award to be matched equally, to develop and commercialise an advanced graphene-based nanocomposite for electrochemical energy storage applications such as lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors.
The $130,000 in funding that was underwritten by the Air Force Research Laboratories was awarded to Pittsburgh-based Industrial Learning Systems with a company match of the same, to assist in the development of a novel silicon wafering technology for the continuous production of nano-structured solar cells.
