NASDAQ-listed US technology licensing company Rambus has acquired technology and a portfolio of advanced lighting and optoelectronics patents including MicroLens light distributing technology, from Global Lighting Technologies.

As part of this agreement, Rambus will pay Global Lighting $26m and gain twelve of its staff including the company’s co-founder, principal inventor and former CEO, Jeff Parker to form a new lighting technology division led by Parker. The team will continue the development of Rambus’ newly acquired innovations. Former Global Lighting president of the licensing division, Chris Pickett, will also join Rambus as a senior licensing executive of the new division.

Following the agreement, Global Lighting will continue its operations as developer of display backlighting products and has become a Rambus licensee for the newly acquired patents and technology.

‘Adding these breakthrough innovations to our portfolio advances our mission of enriching the consumer experience of electronic systems,’ said Harold Hughes, president and CEO of Rambus. ‘Through the work of Jeff Parker and his team, we will continue to enhance the display of games, movies and images on computers and consumer electronic products.’

‘Rambus’ long history of creating and licensing leadership solutions makes it the ideal home for this advanced lighting and optoelectronics technology,’ said Jeff Parker, senior vice president of the lighting technology division of Rambus.

Through this agreement, Rambus has acquired 84 issued patents encompassing numerous innovations in advanced lighting and optoelectronics. Energy efficient light emitting diode (LED) backlighting of liquid crystal displays (LCD) will be a key application area for the acquired innovations.

Rambus is headquartered in Los Altos, California, with regional offices in North Carolina, Ohio, India, Germany, Japan, and Taiwan.
