Remy International’s electric motors to power AMP’s electric car conversions

15 February 2010

US hybrid technology manufacturer Remy International and electric vehicle converter Advanced Mechanical Products have agreed a long-term electric motor supply agreement.

AMP has developed an all-electric drive train for installation into select modern passenger vehicles and said it will use the Remy HVH250 electric motors in their custom electric vehicle conversions. The company said the first two vehicles available for AMP conversions are the GM Saturn Sky and the GM Pontiac Solstice.

The end product is an all-electric vehicle with the built in safeties and handling of a conventional internal combustion engine sports car with a range of up to 150 miles per charge, said AMP. Remy’s patented electric motor technology contributes to the speed and range of AMP’s vehicles, the company added.

AMP’s president Steve Burns said, ‘Remy’s HVH250 electric motor is simply the best on the market today, and is easily integrated into our drive train. Our customers demand the best of both worlds – the speed and performance of a true sports car and the environmental principles of an electric car. This strategic partnership is a direct reflection of our deep commitment to innovation and engineering.’

Remy CEO John Weber added, ‘Our business relationship with AMP is another example of the ease in which the Remy HVH electric motor technology can be integrated seamlessly across a wide array of vehicle and off-road applications.’

Headquartered in Pendleton, Indiana, Remy International is a global manufacturer, remanufacturer and distributor of light duty starters, alternators and hybrid power technology. Recently, Remy International was awarded a $60m grant under the Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative.

AMP was founded in 2007 by automotive industry veterans. Its first conversions to all-electric are the GM Saturn Sky and the Pontiac Solstice, with additional vehicles in development.
