Silver Spring Networks and AEP partner for gridSMART projects

American smart grid innovator Silver Spring Networks has been selected by American Electric Power for the company’s upcoming gridSMART initiative.

The new gridSMART project will take place in two of AEP’s operating companies, Indiana Michigan Power and AEP Ohio. Both installations will enable multiple smart grid applications over a unified network, including distribution automation, home area networking and advanced metering.

The transition will empower consumers, reduce operational costs and enable new technologies including plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The initiative will also allow the integration of renewable energy assets like wind and solar power onto the grid.

Scott Lang, president and CEO of Silver Spring Networks, said, ‘By implementing an open Smart Grid platform, AEP is ensuring it will be read to meet its energy efficiency challenges for generations to come.’

Silver Spring Networks will provide IP standards-based technology which will allow AEP to use other smart grid technology companies to facilitate the project.

GE Energy, a global leader in power generation and energy delivery technologies, will provide smart meters and grid management software. AEP’s goal is to network five million homes and businesses throughout its service territory by 2015.

Silver Spring Networks is a Smart Grid solutions provider that enables utilities to achieve operational efficiencies, reduce carbon emissions and improve customer management over their energy consumption by providing the hardware, software and services necessary to facilitate such innovation.
