US management consultancy firm Accenture have been selected by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to analyse the UK’s readiness to adopt smart grid technology.
The firm will be responsible for analysing electricity grid network and market structure, and advising on how best to go about the adoption of smart grids, so as to enable DECC to develop a case for the viability and potential benefits of the technology.
Smart grids are designed to allow energy and utility companies to manage renewable energy from distributed sources such as wind farms and biomass plants efficiently, as well as supporting the use of electric cars and helping to reduce power wastage.
Omar Abbosh, managing director for Accenture’s UK and Ireland operation, said, ‘The U.K. Government has some of the most ambitious emissions targets in the world and smart grids will be play a central in achieving them, by helping to reduce electricity consumption and by better managing intermittent renewable sources. Smart grids are a national priority but will be built locally. As such, city authorities will play a major part in making smart grids the basis for low carbon living, working and transport.’
Accenture is assisting in the deployment of smart meters and smart grids in Asia, Europe and North America. In March, the firm formed an Intelligent City Network designed to bring together city authorities and utilities who are committed to deploying smart grid technology.
