UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has proposed a $10bn Copenhagen Launch Fund to assist developing countries tackle climate change, as part of a global climate agreement to be reached in Copenhagen in December.
Whilst half of the funding would go towards helping developing countries reduce greenhouse gases, half would assist developing countries adapt to climate change. The funding would include payment for results in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Brown said, ‘I think it is very important that the deadlock is broken. That means that the poorer countries must have an understanding that the richer countries will help them adapt to climate change and make the necessary adjustments in their economies.
‘We have got to provide some money to help that. Britain will do so, the rest of Europe will do so and I believe America will do so as well,’ he added.
According to the Prime Minister, the UK would contribute £800m of the launch fund over three years. Brown added that the UK proportion of the fund has already been budgeted for.
