US Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) funding reaches $2.24bn

US President Barack Obama has approved fiscal year 2010 appropriations for the Department of Energy (DOE), including a three per cent increase in funds for the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) to $2.24bn.

EERE received $2.18bn in annual appropriations in fiscal year 2009. The funding is about three per cent lower than the amount requested by the DOE in its annual budget request, and Congress earmarked more than $292m in EERE funds for congressionally directed projects, effectively lowering the EERE budget to $1.95bn.

Among renewable energy technologies, wind energy fund for 2010 is $80m, which represents a 45 per cent increase since 2009. The Solar Energy Technologies Program gains a 29 per cent increase in funding to $225m for 2010.

The EERE’s Building Technologies Program garnered $200m in 2010 funding, which was a 43 per cent increase above the $140m received by the Program in 2009. The Federal Energy Management Program, a smaller programme aimed at energy use at federal facilities, is receiving $32m in funding, a 45 per cent gain over 2009.

In addition to the EERE funding, the appropriation includes $125m for the research and development of technologies for the smart grid, energy storage, and clean energy transmission and reliability. It also provides $43m for the Innovative Technology Loan Guarantee Program, an amount expected to be repaid with loan fees, and $20m for the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program.
