Viridity and Con Edison team up for New York smart grid project

Energy efficiency company Viridity Energy has teamed up with US power company Con Edison to work on a project of increasing energy efficiency in New York. Con Edison received $45m in smart grid stimulus funding from the US Department of Energy (DOE), and Viridity will work with the utility, alongside the New York City Economic Development Corporation to optimise power generation using advanced building technologies and solar generation.

The project will serve as a smart grid demonstration in New York, with Viridity’s VPower system employed to increase energy efficiency and decreases energy costs. The VPower system allows consumers to evaluate their overall energy load and optimise their energy usage on 24 hour basis.

The goal of the demonstration project is to integrate and aggregate customers’ load, storage and on-site generation resources into virtual generation that can be used as a reliable resource in the wholesale energy markets and on the grid. The system also provides building owners with the ability to optimise their systems with pre-planning schedules and real time re-optimisation.
