French energy storage company McPhy Energy delivers first hydrogen storage tank to CEA Liten

20 April 2010

French solid state hydrogen storage technology company McPhy Energy has delivered the first hydrogen storage tank to the CEA Laboratory of Innovation for New Energy Technologies and Nanomaterials (Liten) in Grenoble as part of a research contract.

The company said the purpose of the agreement with the new energy-focused European research centre is to manufacture two full-size magnesium hydride storage prototypes and test them at industrial scale during which they will be coupled to an electrolyser and a fuel cell simulating an energy storage application.

The company delivered the first storage tank with a hydrogen capacity of 1kg to CEA Liten in March, and within the agreement a second larger 15kg hydrogen system will be installed and tested during the second half of 2010, the company said.

The system is geared towards solving the intermittent nature of these new energy sources, with targeted applications including peak shaving of electrical networks.

McPhy Energy develops, designs, manufactures and sells hydrogen storage systems based on metal hydrides, integrating a phase change material which enables loading and unloading with almost no energy losses, according to the company.

Created in 2008 to industrialise patents developed by the CNRS laboratories (Néel institute – CRETA – LEGI), also in Grenoble, McPhy Energy is supported by EMERTEC venture capital and Areva.
