The US Fuel Cell Councils calls for $1.2bn investment

5 January 2009

The US Fuel Cell Council has called on Congress to take advantage of the federal laws already in place to accelerate green technology across the US, resulting in the creation of 24,000 jobs and a slow down in climate change.

The US Fuel Cell Council requests that Congress set aside $1.2bn in order to ensure the rapid growth of fuel cell power.

They state that fuel cells are essential to achieving carbon reduction goals and can provide continuous base load power in parallel with or independent of the grid.

The Fuel Cell Council calls for $100m to be made available for commercial and defense application and $65m to go towards creating a fueling infrastructure to promote federal grants and tax credits.

Congress should plough $375m into learning demonstrations, with a further $100m invested in manufacturing capacity, according to a statement.

Research would also require nurturing, with the Fuel Cell Council stating that $350m should be set aside for universities and national laboratories.

Finally, $180m would need to be invested in fuel cell transit, including the purchase of at least 100 zero emission buses and funds for relevant infrastructure.

The US Fuel Cell Council is an industry association dedicated to fostering the commercialisation of fuel cells in the US. Its members include fuel cell developers, manufacturers, suppliers and customers.
