NYSE-listed energy company Constellation Energy has appointed Michael D Smith to lead solar sales and green initiatives for the company’s competitive retail energy businesses.
In his new role, Smith will oversee the development and implementation of sustainable product offerings, including renewable generation, energy efficiency, demand response and greenhouse gas reduction strategies.
Smith will also lead the company’s solar power business and a commercial solar sales team focused on the rapid deployment of customer-sited solar installations. As senior vice president of retail green initiatives for Constellation NewEnergy, Smith reports jointly to Mark Huston, managing director of retail energy, Constellation Energy and Michael Kagan, president of retail power, Constellation NewEnergy.
Smith joined Constellation Energy in 2003 after previously serving as vice president and director of Constellation Energy’s international energy policy office in London, where he managed Constellation Energy’s activities in the EU carbon and renewable energy markets, among other regulatory activities.
‘Integrating oversight of the company’s sustainable product initiatives enables us to offer customers a comprehensive suite of green products and services to match their energy and environmental goals,’ said Mark Huston, managing director of retail energy, Constellation Energy. ‘Mike’s extensive energy experience leading international carbon and renewables operations will help us drive continued growth and innovation in sustainable energy initiatives.’
Constellation Energy said it is committed to solar project development over the next several years, with approximately 25MW of solar power systems currently installed or under way in the US, ranging from 200KW to a 17.1MW large-scale project in Emmitsburg, Maryland. In addition to financing, designing and constructing solar installations, the company also supplies power generated on-site to the customer over a period of 15 to 20 years.
A Fortune 500 company headquartered in Baltimore, Constellation Energy had revenues of $19.8bn in 2008.
Constellation Energy supplies energy products and services to wholesale and retail electric and natural gas customers, with a diversified fleet of generating units located in the US and Canada, totalling approximately 7,100MW of generating capacity. The company delivers electricity and natural gas through the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE), its regulated utility in Central Maryland.
