Solar Roadways has been awarded a Department of Transportation contract that will enable them to prototype the first ever solar road panel.
The panel will be designed to collect solar energy to power businesses and homes via structurally-engineered panels that are driven upon in car parks and roadways.
The company believes solar roadways will help the fight against climate change as electric vehicles will be able to recharge along the roadway and in car parks.
It is estimated that it will take roughly $5bn solar road panels to cover the asphalt surfaces in the US alone, which will produce three time more power than the nation actually uses.
