German companies propose €400bn African solar project

A group of 20 companies including Munich Re, Deutsche Bank, Siemens and RWE a planning a €400bn solar energy project in Africa, called Desertec, according to reports.

The scheme would see solar energy generated in Africa transmitted for use by the German consumer electricity market.

The group also includes the German Economy Ministry and the Club of Rome.
