Global Solar Energy’s thin film solar product achieves 15.45 per cent efficiency

The US Department of Energy has confirmed that that the Copper Indium Gallium diSelenide (CIGS) thin film solar products manufactured by Global Solar Energy achieve 15.45per cent efficiency.

Additionally, Global Solar has revealed that their CIGS solar cell strings, manufactured at its 35MW and 40MW plants in Germany and the US, have a peak efficiency of 11.7 per cent. The testing was undertaken by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), which is the nation’s primary laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development. The company has been producing its CIGS products for over five years and this news will contribute to the company’s growing reputation in the thin film photovoltaic market.

Michael Gering, CEO of Global Solar, said, ‘It is great news that our company has achieved this milestone of over 15 per cent total area efficiency verified by NREL. It is even better news that in a full scale production manufacturing environment, in two separate plants, that Global Solar is today producing CIGS strings at 11.7 per cent efficiency.

‘In less than two years, Global Solar increased production capacity from 4.2MW to 75MW worldwide and continues to increase the efficiency of our highly flexible and adaptive PV material. These achievements not only help advance the solar solutions developed by our existing customers and partners, but also open the door of opportunity for new usages and BIPV applications in the market.’
