NYSE-listed Japanese solar cell producer Kyocera Corporation will provide approximately 13MW of solar modules for the Ohgishima solar power plant Mega Solar System, planned by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) with construction by Hitachi.
Scheduled for completion in 2011, the installation will be one of the largest in Japan, according to the company. The Kyocera solar modules will cover about 57 acres, and will be installed on an artificial island just outside of Tokyo Bay.
The new contract represents an upturn for the company since in October it reported an 80.7 per cent drop in profits for the first half of the year despite drastic cost-cutting measures. Kyocera has supplied 13.8MW of modules for Spain’s Planta Solar de Salamanca and other large-scale projects.
With over 34 years of experience in the solar business, Kyocera first began research into solar energy in 1975, and since has developed a fully-integrated production process controlling every phase of manufacturing, from procuring raw silicon to assembling finished modules.
Kyocera Corporation, the parent company of the Kyocera Group, has operated in the US for 40 years supplying solar power generating systems, telecommunications equipment, electronic components, laser printers, copiers, semiconductor packages, cutting tools and industrial ceramics.
